What is Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic, complementary therapy designed to activate the body's natural healing processes. It works on the principle that the entire body is mapped out on the feet, hands and face with each area containing specific points that correspond to major organs, glands, and body parts. By applying pressure to these reflex points, a reflexologist helps to unblock energy pathways and promote overall well-being.

During a reflexology session, a therapist may use a variety of techniques. This could include "walking" their thumbs across the reflex areas of your feet or hands, applying pressure with knuckles, sliding or holding and pressing on specific reflex points - especially for facial or cranial reflexology where a more delicate touch is needed.

Most of my clients choose foot reflexology, but I am also trained in hand, cranial, and facial reflexology, allowing me to offer treatments that are perfectly tailored to each individual's needs. I am passionate about continually expanding my knowledge, taking advanced training to deepen my expertise in this fabulous treatment.

What to Expect During a Reflexology Session

A typical reflexology session with me lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, with most clients opting for a 60-minute treatment. Before your first session, we'll go through a confidential consultation to ensure that reflexology is the right fit for you and to discuss any health concerns or specific issues you'd like to address.
During the session, if you’re having foot reflexology, you will lie face up on my extra-wide, extra-padded massage table, with your legs comfortably supported by a bolster. You’ll need to remove your shoes and socks, and I will use soothing massage techniques on your feet and ankles to promote relaxation.

If you’re opting for facial or cranial reflexology, you will also lie face up on the table. I may ask you to remove your top (you will be covered with a sheet) to prevent any facial oil from damaging your clothes. For facial reflexology, I will work closely around your eyes, nose and mouth and may also massage your scalp. I use special crystal tools during facial reflexology to enhance the treatment and provide a deeply relaxing experience.

The Health Benefits of Reflexology

It’s important to remember that while reflexology is not a cure for any specific medical condition and I cannot diagnose issues, it has many potential health benefits. It works by rebalancing the body’s energy flow, helping to improve your overall health and well-being. Some of the common benefits may include:

  • Activating the body’s natural healing abilities

  • Reducing stress, anxiety, and tension

  • Helping to alleviate pain

  • Inducing deep relaxation

  • Promoting better sleep

  • Improving overall well-being

  • Revitalising and rebalancing the body

Reflexology can also be a supportive therapy for those managing ongoing health challenges, helping the body cope with stress and discomfort.

Origins of Reflexology

Reflexology has a rich history, with evidence suggesting its practice dates back over 5,000 years in regions like the Far East, India, and ancient Egypt. In its modern form, reflexology, originally known as "zone therapy," began in the USA in the early 20th century. By the 1930s, the practice had evolved into what we now know as reflexology and gained traction in Europe and the UK by the 1960s.

Though the exact science behind reflexology is still not fully understood, ongoing studies, such as those led by Kevin and Barbara Kunz in the USA, are uncovering fascinating insights into what happens in the body and brain when reflex points are stimulated. As more research emerges, I look forward to seeing further results and findings.

My Qualifications

I am a fully qualified reflexologist, having received training from some of the most respected experts in their field. I have trained at the London School of Reflexology under Ziggie Bergman and at the Reflexology Academy London with Hagar Basis. I have also completed additional training with Sally Earlam, Lynne Booth and Florence Cohen.

This dedication to my craft has been recognized through multiple awards. I am honoured to have won Best Reflexology Practice 2024 - North East England in the Global Health & Pharma (GHP) Magazine's 2024 Global Excellence Awards. Earlier this year, I was also named Reflexologist of the Year 2024 (Tyne & Wear) in their Social Care Awards.

If you’re curious about how reflexology could help you, or if you’d like to book a session, feel free to contact me. I’d be happy to discuss how we can create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
